AAAS Action Alert

Image American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest scientific association, sent out an Action Alert on May 8, 2007, informing its members of Dr. Alamgir's case. AAAS was involved in the effort to free Dr. Alamgir also in 2002.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an urgent request for your help to free Dr. M. K. Alamgir, a prominent economist who's been imprisoned in Bangladesh, since February 4.

The military-backed government in Bangladesh has filed a series of farcical cases against him, and is persecuting him essentially to
silence him, for he has always been a very vocal pro-democracypolitical leader. He was jailed and tortured back in 2002, in a
similar pattern. A worldwide human rights movement, including AAAS helped secure his release later that year.

Dr. Alamgir's legal recourse is minimal, as the government has suspended all fundamental rights, extended its authority to arrest
without showing any cause, set up special tribunals outside regular legal confines, and severely restricted due process, including the right to bail, and even the right to appeal against its summary verdicts.

At this point, hope rests on international pressure on the government.

Please voice your concern.
